Just five miles south of the Canadian boarder lies a place where both skis and swimsuits reign supreme–Jay Peak Resort, VT.
With nearly 80 runs, 9 lifts and an average snowfall of 349 inches per year (no, that is not a typo!), Jay Peak offers some of the best skiing and snowboarding in all of New England. If ever you tire of the 50 miles of trails, two terrain parks or 100+ acres of breathtaking glade skiing, a $25 million dollar waterpark awaits at the resort’s Pump House. Inside is a mecca of waterslides, pools and hot tubs. Whether you’re looking to plunge at 45 miles per hour down La Chute or simply float aimlessly along the lazy river, The Pump House is the perfect way to chill “in” after a chilly day on the slopes. As if that weren’t enough, Jay Peak also has an indoor skating arena, a spa, an arcade, a movie theater and a new climbing gym! Oh–and just one more thing–it’s all connected by underground tunnels!!
That’s a lot to take in, so let’s break it down:
Lodging Pick: The Tram Haus. These 1, 2 and 3 bedroom suites feature a kitchen or kitchenette with a stove, fridge and microwave as well as a gas fireplace. Pick up some staples at the onsite grocery (Provisions General Store) and you’ll be set for a quick (and economical) in-room breakfast before you take on the mountain. The Tram Haus is skin in and ski out, with each room being assigned a locker conveniently located downstairs. In addition, it is one of three lodging options that is connected to the entire resort via an underground tunnel system (a bit confusing at first, but it gets easier, I promise!) One tip: request a lower floor. Elevators are S.L.O.W. and stairs + ski boots = challenge.
Restaurant Advice: The resort is huge but the crowds can be too. Make reservations in advance or consider eating on off hours. Mountain Dicks offers pizza to go– order ahead and pick it up to bring back to the room or to one of the lounge areas around the resort. Skip the crowded ski cafeterias and hit up Provisions General Store for excellent deli and breakfast sandwiches.
Final Tips:
- Jay offers various deals and discounts if you purchase at least 24 hours in advance. Definitely check out this section before booking and consider the combo packs if you plan to use the waterpark.
- Wrist bands are issued upon arrival at the hotel for use in the waterpark. Remember to secure it in a spot that will be comfy under your ski glove (if you are a parent with young children, you will totally understand the importance of this!)
- Snagging a float for the lazy river can be a challenge. Hang by the river entrance closest to where the slides dump out for the best shot at getting a coveted double tube.
- Don’t forget to throw in your passports if you want to take a quick trip over the boarder, eh!
