Hidden Gems: Reynolds Plantation Lake Oconee

An empty billboard sign stands above a large but drab and faded grey building. A tall wooden fence, beat down by the hot Georgia sun hides the shade-covered windows and discrete front door. To anyone driving by, the building screams: ABANDONED. To Lake Oconee locals, the Silver Moon Pub in Eatonton, Ga., is a booming hot spot. Located just down the road from the main entrance to Reynolds Plantation, the Silver Moon offers inexpensive, southern comfort food in a rust-lectic atmosphere.

As you pull into the dusty, dirt parking lot, expectations remain low and the walk to the hidden front door doesn’t do much to raise them. Out-of-towners quickly stand out as they look for a hostess that doesn’t exist. But it doesn’t take long to pick up on the protocol. A large chalkboard mounted to the wall allows guests to add their name and party size to the quickly growing list. Word to the wise–get there early. This is the 36-table-deep list at 6:15 on a random Wednesday night.

Any skepticism about the exterior quickly subsides as the wait staff whizzes by delivering large trays of delicious smelling food. A quick chat with one of the locals and you’ll be making the tough decision between the signature fish & chips and the chicken tenders with a variety of sauce offerings. What isn’t up for debate: the parmesan grits. (You’re welcome.) If you’re looking to change it up, the daily specials do not disappoint and the raw bar is a must for oyster lovers. The best part? It won’t break the bank. Most entrees are around $15.

Stop on by 1077 Greensboro Rd, Eatonton, GA. I’d give you the web site, but no surprise– they don’t have one!
